A snapshot of my experience thus far:

2013: Began practicing value investing

2015: Certified as an Associate Wealth Planner

2017: Licensed as an Independent FA working with Promiseland Independent

2020: Graduated from Singapore Management University with the highest distinction

Allow me to introduce myself whilst answering the 4 commonly asked questions:

"Who are you and why should I trust you?"

Truly a million-dollar question. As it is impossible for someone to trust a stranger straight away, the best way to answer this is to start by introducing myself. I’m Daniel and I’m an IFA representative specializing in the areas of retirement planning.

In terms of my background, I graduated from SMU with the highest distinction and I was also certified as an Associate Wealth Planner by the Financial Planning Association of Singapore. While the grades and certifications do not mean much, what I hope it communicates to you is my work ethics and my ability to get the job done up to standards
 

I’ve also been investing since 2013, and over the years, I’ve been reading intensively and learned from my own mistakes and the mistakes of others. From there, I’ve picked up a few valuable lessons which can be then applied to your financial planning and improve your performance while avoiding costly mistakes.

This is why in terms of, attitude, work ethics, experience, and knowledge, I believe I am the right guy whom you can trust to help you craft out your financial plans, do the market research, and get the job done at the end of the day.

"Why did you join this industry?"

Unlike others who joined the industry because they want to “help” others, I joined this industry purely from a business angle. At the end of the day, we all just want to be able to earn an income, and if we’re doing something that we enjoy that’s even better.

Finance was something I truly enjoy and during my poly internship with the Government Investment Corporation [GIC], I learned that I needed to be in a job that has high levels of human interaction. And hence I decided to enter into this industry because it provides a platform for me to do what I enjoy – finance and interaction - whilst earning an income.  

"Will you be in the industry for long?"

In this industry, nobody can provide any form of guarantee that he or she will definitely stay in this industry. What is true, however, is that the longer we continue to be in this industry, the chances of us leaving decreases and for a very simple reason: our income increases with the number of clients that we serve and that will only increase over the years.

As I continue towards my goal – 100 clients each investing $100,000 with me – the probability of me leaving this industry diminishes exponentially. It is also worth adding that once I reach my goal, I will also start closing my doors to new clients as it is only fair that I spent all my time servicing the 100 clients alone.

"Why go independent? Why not join an insurance agency or bank?"

“Do unto others what you want others to do unto you”

 

That is and always will be my business philosophy. Unfortunately, joining an insurance agency or bank goes against this philosophy for a very simple reason:

If I were to represent a single firm, I can only carry and distribute the products of that firm. And since I myself will never build my portfolio using only the products of a single company, It doesn’t make sense for me to build my client’s portfolio using only the products of a single company.

By going independent straight away, we will be able to compare and distribute the products and solutions across the different banks, insurance companies, and investment firms, thereby providing me with the ability to service my clients to their best interests.
